On July 2nd of a future year, monitoring stations across the United States detected a giant spaceship, several hundred miles in diameter, approaching Earth. The radio signals emitted by the spaceship interfered with communication satellites on Earth and released several smaller ships, each 15 miles in diameter, that flew over major cities. The nature of the alien spacecraft was uncertain, causing panic and confusion among the people. Computer engineer David (played by Jeff Goldblum) deciphered the alien radio signals, which turned out to be a countdown to an attack. He managed to notify his ex-wife, Connie, an assistant to the President, but it was too late. On July 3rd, the alien ships began their assault on Earth, delivering a devastating blow to human civilization. The President (played by Bill Pullman) and others evacuated to a military base to command the airforce's counterattacks, but it was like hitting a stone with an egg, proving ineffective. The military base was destroyed, and only pilot Steven (played by Will Smith) managed to trick an alien fighter into crashing. The survivors fled to a secret military base, where scientists had been researching an alien ship that had crashed over 50 years ago, striving to find a way to combat the aliens; this place was humanity's last hope...
