In the autumn of 1941, during the Anti-Japanese War, in order to stop the Japanese army's sweeping operations in the Jin-Cha-Ji border area, a squad leader from a unit of the Eighth Route Army, Ma Baoyu (Li Changhua), along with soldiers Ge Zhenlin (Gao Baocheng), Song Xueyi (Li Li), Hu Fucai (Huo Deji), and Hu Delin (Zhang Huaizhi), accepted the mission to ascend the main peak of Wangyashan at Qipandu. The Japanese army launched a fierce assault on Wangyashan with a force of 3,000 soldiers. The five warriors, undeterred by their numerical disadvantage, took advantage of the advantageous terrain to engage in a stubborn fight with the Japanese, who had airplanes and artillery. The Japanese army made three consecutive fierce charges, all of which were repelled by them, successfully completing the task of holding back the Japanese forces. When they had run out of ammunition and supplies, the five warriors still did not give up on fighting the Japanese, battling until the very last moment.
