On August 8, 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, and a million Soviet Red Army troops entered Northeast China. On August 9, Mao Zedong issued a statement entitled 'The Final Battle Against the Japanese Aggressors,' calling on all anti-Japanese forces in China to launch a nationwide counteroffensive. Subsequently, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De issued a series of counteroffensive orders, demanding that our Jireliao Military Region stationed at the Hebei and Liaoning borders immediately divide into three paths to advance into Liaoning and Jilin, in coordination with the Soviet Red Army to completely drive the Japanese troops out of the three northeastern provinces. The 16th Division of the Jireliao Military Region was a heroic unit that had long persisted in anti-Japanese efforts in Eastern Hebei, being the closest to Northeast China. Under the leadership of Commander Zeng Keling, they quickly moved out of the pass. Overcoming numerous difficulties along the way, they fought alongside the Soviet Red Army, securing Shanhaiguan, which was held by the Japanese troops, clearing the obstacles for subsequent units to enter Northeast China. Afterward, they traveled in a 40-car 'mixed train' composed of stoves, flatbed and passenger cars, moving straight to Jinzhou and stationed in Shenyang. Due to the Sino-Soviet Treaty signed between the Soviet government and the Nationalist government, the stationed Soviet troops insisted on handing over Shenyang and other major cities to the Nationalists, refusing to allow Zeng Keling's troops into Shenyang. Zeng Keling, who was careful yet bold, argued with reason and finally established a foothold in Shenyang.
