The Cangshan Mountains are vast, and the sea of clouds is boundless. The sun filters through the dense leaves, casting dappled light onto the forest. In the forest, a hunting rifle is aimed at a wolf by the stream. As one wolf slowly turns into a pack, Tian Da, holding the rifle, takes a deep breath and once again returns empty-handed. Since the Japanese invasion, Tian Da has been hiding in these deep mountains with his wife, Cui Er, and their infant son, living by hunting. But since the day they entered the forest, Cui Er has never heard Tian Da fire a shot; not even when a few sheep in their pen were taken away by wolves did he pull the trigger. Thus, their days pass quietly and impoverished. One day, while out hunting, Tian Da rescues a wolf cub from a rock crevice.
