In February 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima, dubbed the 'meat grinder of the Pacific,' came to an end. On the fifth day of fighting, five U.S. Navy soldiers, a corpsman, and an embedded reporter together 'created' an iconic photo, a symbol of national victory: they raised the American flag at the highest point of Iwo Jima. When the photo made headlines in major U.S. newspapers, three of the six heroes were still unaware that they had become heroes and would die bravely. The remaining three survivors, however, never mentioned that war after it ended, as if they had not participated in it at all. They did not go to war to become heroes; they fought for their country. As they watched their comrades fall one by one, they felt that the meaning of life was slowly slipping away...
