The film is set against the backdrop of World War I and tells the story of three French prisoners of war escaping from a German concentration camp. Three French pilots are shot down by the German army during a mission, and Bodio, Mike, and Rosenthal are taken to a POW camp. Bodio and the German camp commandant, Rofenshtain, are both of noble descent and share similar political views, becoming friends in prison. The three men later discover that their fellow inmates are working on an escape plan, having dug a tunnel for their escape. Mike and Rosenthal also join in the digging effort. Ultimately, they all escape together, with the Germans pursuing them. During their flight, Bodio is knocked down by Rofenshtain, while the two French prisoners, Mike and Rosenthal, manage to escape to a German farmer's house, where with her help, they manage to reach Switzerland after various challenges. This film is one of the earliest escape films and is regarded as one of the greatest 'escape movies'. It is also director Jean Renoir's anti-war masterpiece.
