On an unexpectedly quiet morning in Philadelphia, former UN investigator Gerry Lane (played by Brad Pitt) drives his wife Karen (played by Mireille Enos) and their two daughters, Rachel (played by Abigail Hargrove) and Connie (played by Sterling Jerins), out. However, the initially happy atmosphere quickly turns into one of panic and death, with a series of explosions, terrified crowds fleeing, chaotic traffic accidents, and zombies attacking others, as the thriving metropolis falls in an instant. Gerry exhausts all his efforts to escape with his wife and daughters, ultimately reaching the aircraft carrier where the UN Deputy Secretary-General is located, only to learn that several world leaders, including the President of the United States, are already dead and the zombie virus has spread globally. To stop the world's destruction, Gerry reluctantly accepts a mission with virus expert Dr. Fasbaker (played by Elyes Gabel) from Harvard to journey to the source of the virus in search of a way to resolve the crisis. This is a journey nearly devoid of hope and filled with suffering, as the fate of the world hangs by a thread...
