In 1959, Che Guevara (played by Benicio Del Toro) and the guerrilla group led by Fidel Castro (played by Rodrigo Santoro) finally overthrew the Batista regime and established a new government in Cuba through the 26th of July Movement. However, over time, Che and Fidel gradually developed differences in their ideas about governance. Ultimately, Che resigned from his important position in the government, renounced his family and Cuban citizenship, and dedicated himself once again to the struggle for the liberation of the Third World. After many twists and turns, Che arrived in Bolivia, where he joined forces with the Bolivian National Liberation Army to launch a guerrilla revolutionary movement. Bolivian President René Barrientos (played by Joaquim de Almeida) learned of Che's arrival and decided to eliminate this troublesome revolutionary at all costs... To portray the revolutionary years of Che Guevara in a detailed and authentic manner, renowned American director Steven Soderbergh spent four hours depicting this legendary hero. Ultimately, for theatrical release needs, the film was split into two parts. The film won the Best Actor Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
