The story is set during the latter part of the Pacific War, when the Japanese Navy suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Midway against the US Navy; four aircraft carriers of the First Mobile Fleet were sunk; Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Combined Fleet, was killed, and the Japanese garrison forces on various islands in the Pacific were gradually defeated, putting the Japanese Navy in a severely disadvantageous position. In the spring of 1944 (Showa 19), a special juvenile soldier named Kamio, filled with admiration for the battleship Yamato, stepped onto the deck of the super-dreadnought battleship Yamato. At that time, Yamato was a symbol of hope for the Japanese people and military. Kamio endured the harsh training aboard the ship and then faced his first actual combat — the Battle of Leyte Gulf.In this naval battle, the Combined Fleet had essentially collapsed. Faced with the brutal battlefield, Yamato and its crew set sail with the determination to defend their homeland, preparing for their final tragic showdown.
