This film is based on true events from the Korean War. In August 1950, the Korean People's Army captured Seoul and continued advancing south. The South Korean side recruited students to join the army, forming the 'Apprentice Volunteer Corps' to resist fiercely. The unit of apprentice soldier Wu Zhangfan (played by Choi Seung-hyun/T.O.P) was repeatedly repelled by the People's Army. To replenish their ranks, dozens of apprentice soldiers joined the fighting, including a troubled student named Zhao (played by Kwon Sang-woo), whose parents were killed by the People's Army. These apprentice soldiers formed a small team of 71, led by Wu Zhangfan to defend Pohang, while the South Korean troops retreated to the last defense line before Busan—Naktong River. The isolated team of apprentice soldiers set up defense in an abandoned school, facing the elite 766 unit of the Korean People's Army. Major Park Mulang (played by Cha Seung-won) of the People's Army orders an attack on Pohang, which is closer to Busan, to fulfill the leader's mission.
