General Sun Yi in the Battle of Siping

In the spring of 1946, the Northeast Democratic United Army, led by the Communist Party of China, engaged in fierce battles with the Nationalist army in Siping, Jilin. A constant stream of injured soldiers withdrawing from the front lines died in the rear due to inadequate medical treatment. Faced with a significant reduction in troops caused by delayed medical care, Sun Yizhi, then Minister of Health for the Northeast Democratic United Army, was granted permission by Commander Huang Kecheng to establish a battlefield central hospital in a deserted church, which served as the command post at the front. The battlefield central hospital built in the church was relatively safe, but in the face of the large number of injured soldiers, the lack of clothing and medicine became the most pressing issue, especially the shortage of surgeons. After consulting with superiors, Sun Yizhi decided to recruit doctors from the captured Nationalist soldiers. His decision faced opposition from Director Tang and Dr. Liu at the hospital, but with Sun Yizhi's insistence and the reality of the situation, a group of captured Nationalist doctors, including Shi Jian and Zeng Sanmin, were integrated into the battlefield central hospital. Once their initial concerns were alleviated by Sun Yizhi's sincerity, Shi Jian, Zeng Sanmin, and others took to the operating table, alleviating the shortage of doctors at the hospital and saving a large number of injured soldiers.
