In 1942, the flames of the Japanese invasion of China reached the central Plains of Hebei. Bowing down in submission would lead only to death; resisting was the only way out. The people of Hebei mobilized to fight against the Japanese army, particularly in Gaojiazhuang, which gathered a large number of militia. To combat the Japanese army's planes and artillery, the local people excavated a network of intricate tunnels utilizing the terrain. Militia leader Gao Chuanbao (played by Zhu Longguang) used these clever tunnels to lead his troops in unconventional warfare against the Japanese army. Although they suffered greatly due to the betrayal of a traitor in their midst, Tang Binghui (played by Liu Jiang), the intelligent and brave Gao Chuanbao ultimately led his troops to encircle the Japanese forces through the tunnels, eliminate Tang Binghui, and capture the Japanese commander Yamada (played by Wang Xiaozhong). The victory in tunnel warfare sounded the loudest call for resistance against Japan in central Hebei.
