The film tells the story of the first African American pilots during World War II, who overcame systemic and racial limitations of their time to form a special experimental bomber escort unit known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Their aircraft were all marked with a 'red tail,' which became their nickname. The 'Red Tails' were the first all-Black pilot squadron in the history of the U.S. military, sent to Alabama for combat training and ready to fight. There, they faced rampant racism and harassment, and their flying and combat abilities were often questioned, but the 'Red Tails' excelled in the air, prompting the Air Force to abolish the policy of segregation. They played an indispensable role in the conflicts against Italy and Germany.
