 Synopsis
The story of this film is based on true events. On December 13, 1937, the invading Japanese army captured the city of Nanjing and carried out a brutal massacre. To protect the lives of refugees and Chinese soldiers, Master Jiran and the monks of Qixia Temple spontaneously organized to establish a Buddhist refugee shelter, providing assistance and resettlement to over 24,000 refugees. In their resistance against the Japanese army, many monks were tragically killed by Japanese gunfire. Master Jiran and others, unafraid of sacrifice, aided the injured and ill refugees while also trying to protect anti-Japanese soldiers by helping them safely cross the river, risking their lives to smuggle out film documenting the Japanese army's atrocities in Nanjing. Throughout the struggle against the Japanese army, the unarmed Chinese monks faced death without fear, wielding the Buddha's teachings of compassion and dedication to saving all sentient beings as their weapon, leading a direct confrontation by writing open letters to expose the Japanese army's brutality, engaging in a battle of humanity against barbarity. Ultimately, justice triumphed over evil, preserving the ancient temple that has stood for a thousand years and ensuring the safety of over 24,000 refugees. The film promotes the great spirit of humanitarianism and patriotism, highlighting the noble patriotic sentiments of Buddhist monks, and showcases a lesser-known story.
