During the Long March, the vanguard troops of the Red Army managed to shake off the pursuing powerful enemy. Under the leadership of Commander Zhang (played by Li Jiufang) and Political Commissar Qin (played by Zhou Zhengyu), they arrived at the southern bank of the Wu River, historically known as a "natural fortress." Huangjia Village by the river had been ravaged by the enemy, with all houses reduced to rubble, livestock stolen, and only a few smoking broken wooden boats remaining on the riverbank. The troops organized to help extinguish fires and rescue people while sending small teams to scout enemy conditions, looking for an opportunity to cross the Wu River. The enemy brigade commander (played by Xing Jitian) on the northern bank received a telegram from headquarters ordering him to hold the Wu River at all costs. He promised a reward of opium and ordered his subordinates to form a death squad to resist the Red Army's attack.
