In 1937, due to pressure from both domestic and foreign fronts, the Nationalist Party's National Defense Committee agreed to release Communist political prisoners in the context of the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. A deputy company commander of a certain unit of the Eighth Route Army, Gao Kui, was ordered to lead his unit to Yuncheng, Shanxi, to welcome the nine underground party comrades who were being released. Due to the tense situation in the war, Gao Kui's Eighth Route Army division had to move ahead to Pingxingguan, so Gao Kui had to lead this group of old, weak, ill, and disabled soldiers northward in search of his unit. Unknown to everyone, one of the underground party's leading comrades in this group had previously infiltrated the Zhongtong agency in Xuchang, Henan, and may have had contact with high-ranking spies from Zhongtong who are currently in hiding in Yan'an.
