 Synopsis
The Fourth Company of a certain regiment has been rated as a "Model Company" by higher authorities for two consecutive years. One day, a new soldier named Qu Xiaolong was transferred from the recruit company. He is afraid of hardship and fatigue, loves vanity, and his military skills are not solid. The company commander thought about which squad to assign him to. The second platoon leader, Jin Dahong, has a serious mentality of "protecting the model status," always worried that the company will not maintain its status, having an incorrect view of honor, and has a resistance to Qu Xiaolong's arrival. Squad leader Niu Fushan is impatient and has a simple and rough method of work. Therefore, the company commander decided to assign Qu Xiaolong to the second platoon's fifth squad, to guide him well and also use this opportunity for ideological education for Jin Dahong and Niu Fushan. During an emergency assembly, Xiaolong dragged his feet, affecting the Fourth Company's final arrival. As a result, the "mobile red flag" was taken away by other companies. On the way back, the company commander Lin Zhiyong added a mountain climbing session. Qu Xiaolong complained, and after returning to the camp, he posted a big character poster on the commander, accusing him of being a "warlord remnant" and "simple and crude." Niu Fushan, seeing this, was so angry that he tore down the poster. The commander thought it was inappropriate to tear down posters casually and asked Niu Fushan to reflect. Second platoon leader Jin Dahong disagreed with tearing down the poster but also had objections to the commander's decision to increase the training. Just as one wave of issues subsided, another emerged. One Sunday, Niu Fushan went to help Qu Xiaolong, but they couldn’t agree and ended up arguing again, with Niu Fushan stepping on and flattening Xiaolong's flute. The commander bought a new flute for Xiaolong and asked Niu Fushan to deliver it and apologize to him. To help with the ideological work for both Xiaolong and Niu Fushan and strengthen their unity, the commander gathered them to form a small band, but they couldn’t get along at all and ended up parting ways unhappily. The problem lay in Xiaolong's poor background, yet he was afraid of hardship and fatigue, free-spirited, and in low spirits. To understand the situation, the commander moved into the fifth squad's dormitory. One day, the commander accidentally saw a food bag beside Xiaolong's pillow, on which the words "Resolutely Revolution to the End" were written in big letters. This was exactly the food bag previously owned by the commander. How did it end up with Xiaolong? It turned out that over a decade ago, during the liberation of Guangzhou, a group of bandits committed robbery at Xiaolong's home, and one of the bandits menacingly raised a bayonet toward Xiaolong to stab him. In that instant, a gunshot rang out, and the bandit fell. Subsequently, Lin Zhiyong fought fiercely against the bandits. He killed several enemies but was severely injured himself. When Lin was carried away, he left the food bag with the impoverished Xiaolong family. Later, when Xiaolong enlisted, his mother urged him to keep the food bag close, reminding him not to forget the Communist Party's kindness and to be resolute in revolution. At that moment, Commander Lin Zhiyong realized that Qu Xiaolong was the child he had saved back then. However, Commander Lin did not tell Xiaolong that he had saved him; instead, he used the bloody history from before liberation to enlighten and educate him. Soon, Xiaolong’s sister, Xiaozhu, came to the company with a cultural troupe to perform. At the suggestion of the company instructor, to help Xiaolong and educate all the soldiers in the company, Xiaozhu wrote a singing piece about the food bag story to sing to the entire company. After hearing it, Xiaolong was filled with regret and felt guilty toward the People's Liberation Army that saved him. From then on, with the help of the commander’s teaching and influence, Xiaolong improved his awareness and took the initiative to write a big character poster for self-criticism.
